Laura’s stories include secrets – a few of her own as well as some she was privileged to hear from the Bench –to share the lessons of the immeasurable value of listening and believing. Many of the cases she depicts involve children – children who were believed and then protected by the adults they trusted, and those who were not. To provide a framework for these stories, Laura tells her own story as a female in the Deep South, raised in a conservative culture with strict expectations. Laura candidly describes her professional struggles to do justice, including her decision to impose the death penalty twice. Witnesses are often required to tell in public their darkest secrets, and this is particularly true of child victims. Laura describes the turmoil and uncertainty that led to her decision to leave the Bench after ten years, and she takes the reader on her extended solo RV trip around the country.. She served as a judge for 10 years sitting in each of the divisions of Circuit Court: Criminal (felonies that include serious drug crimes, burglary, rape, and murder), Juvenile (children who have been abused or neglected and those charged with a crime), Family (divorce, custody, child support), Civil (personal injury and wrongful death, contract, business, etc.),He also sheds more light on Jung's relationship with Freud and with many other important and/or famous people throughout the world. Thus, I would highly recommend reading M,D,R, although Hayman implies that is was written to make Jung appear more heroic than he actually was. In addition, Hayman mentions several times that some patients would complain that Jung would not listen to their specific problem and would instead provide them with examples from the collective unconscious. . Bodanis argues that it was this experience that caused Einstein’s biggest mistake, his later rejection of quantum theory, since it caused him to be overly skeptical of experimental results and to rely too strongly on his belief that simplicity is evidence of truth. This well written, honest book pulls no punches. A natural story-teller, Melvin captures the reader with frank prose. By the way, Hayman does not give a single example of a patient saying that the analysis was not helpful. First, a disclaimer.
